Iyad Burnat of the Friends of Freedom and Justice, Bil’in Posted this appeal today (April 16, 2012). Marco is in the Tel Aviv Deportation Centre awaiting his court date to appeal his deportation.

Marco Mohamed Abdelaal, a 32 year old ISM activist was arrested April 11, 2012 at the 7th Annual International Bil’in Conference on the Palestinian Popular Struggle held in the old city of Occupied Hebron. Marco was arrested with 11 other conference attendees: four Internationals and eight Palestinians, including multiple conference organizers. Marco is being held in immigration detention as he begins the appeal process for deportation on the charges of assaulting a soldier. Two of the arrested Internationals were released without charge and the third cooperated with the deportation proceedings. Two of the eight Palestinians arrested remain in jail and will face trial early next week.

Appealing Marco’s deportation costs 15,000NIS (€3,041)

The International Solidarity Movement alongside the Popular Struggle rejects the charges brought against Marco and the violent attack on nonviolent conference attendees. We strongly believe this is an attempt to stifle the education and participation of the international community in the nonviolent struggle to end the Occupation. The Bil’in Conference is an annual event bringing in hundreds of solidarity activists each year and strengthens the global movement against the Occupation. Marco’s unfounded charges and deportation sentence is meant to erode interest in this vital, Palestinian-led conference.

Over 200 Internationals and Palestinians attended the Bil’in Conference to discuss critical issues surrounding the nonviolent Palestinian resistance to the Israeli Occupation. Workshops were held about nonviolent resistance in Area C, strategies for the global BDS movement, the role of international solidarity in the struggle, and more. Speakers at the conference included European Parliament Member Louisa Morgantini and Palestinian Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad.
